Free Forex Tick Data

March 1, 2008 by Trader Rich

The only place I know where you can get free forex tick data is at Gain Capital’s site, http://ratedata.gaincapital.com but from my experience and from other traders I’ve spoken too, the data is spotty at best.  There are gaps, format differences, and data overlaps.  What can you expect though, the data free.  I tried for a long time to fill gaps and clean up the data but I gave up.  There was just too much data and it was going to be impossible to verify.

A trader sent me an email a couple of days ago about Oanda providing tick data.  It’s free but with a condition.  You have to have at least a $1000 account with Oanda.  You then can request tick data for one currency pair (GBP/USD, EUR/USD, USD/JPY, USD/CAD, or USD/CHF) that goes as far back as January 1st, 2004.  Oanda’s states that it may take up to two weeks for them to send the data to you and you can only have one request open at a time.  So if you want tick data for all five currency pairs, it will take about ten weeks.

If you’re an academic faculty member, you don’t need an account open with Oanda.  You can get an exemption and obtain the data for free.

More details are available at https://fxtrade.oanda.com/cgi/fxticks/order.cgi

    I always recomende daily charts
easy to understand trend, all signals are more serioz (candles)and very easy to find your limits and stop loss.
daily charts are master - book - for all trade !!!!
more pips, more money, less stress ..
dont trade eur/$ bc all world trade this pair and = more supports and ress. lines than others …
too hard to go over these lines every day …
very easy pairs as $/CAD & AUD/$ give you money every day
ask your mentor Rob about these pairs
ALL are trading these simple pairs bc their lines are very clear, no mess around…
    good luck to you

Free is good but what about the speed of obtaining the tick data? Vhayu Velocity for Equities gives users the ability to crunch massive amounts of real-time and historical data in milliseconds for concise analysis that provides brokers and hedge funds with a clear competitive trading advantage.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks! What are the fields in this data and how do I organize it in a more normal Date,Time,…etc? I don’t even see a date or time field am I missing something?

I used these guys who have great data but I like to test systems on a few different datasets becasue no two FX data sources are perfectly identical.

Ishtomar, I haven’t parsed through this data in a long time but I may still have my perl scripts that did it for me. Contact me offline if you want them. Hit the “contact me” on top right menu.
