Is Trading The Asian Session a Waste Of Time?

April 2, 2007 by Trader Rich

Simon doesn't think it's a waste of time. He thinks it's the perfect training ground for newer forex traders. He brings up some great points like his comparison of the Asian session to the London/New York session: "Just think of the Asian session as being like a mini version of London and New York combined with a smaller ADR."

I rarely trade the Asian session but I used to when I first started trading. I just found the moves too few and far between but maybe because my expectations were too close to those I had for the London/New York session. From what I have seen though, if you are going to trade the Asian session, try to stick with the Japanese pairs like the USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, or the highly volatile GBP/JPY.

I’m not so sure it’s a good idea, there is usually some movement at the start of the session, but the 2nd half is like watching paint dry. The lack of momentum makes trading difficult.

Well it depends what pair you are trading. The yen related pairs can have some decent moves during the asian session, especially if there were big moves during the euro/us sessions and asian traders are realigning inventories.
